A Tale of Two Factories

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Observe production of ceramic plumbing fixtures from processing of raw materials, all the way to final packaging of the completed product as you tour two production facilities. During the first half of the tour, the learner will watch processing of raw materials, forming of the pre-fired plumbing fixtures using a plaster casting process, heat tempering in the kiln, fitting of hardware, quality control inspection, and packaging for distribution. During part 2, the learner will follow the production process from processing of raw materials, laboratory testing of slurry, forming of pre-fired plumbing fixtures using a pressure casting process, heat tempering in the kiln, fitting of hardware, quality control inspection, and packaging for distribution. Upon completion, the learner will be able to articulate the primary benefits and drawbacks of the two different casting processes, including how the processes involved contribute to lower life-cycle impacts.

AIA/CES qualified for four LUs of HSW qualified credit and four LUs of GBCI qualified credit.
